The subway has been a great school filled with inspired models, but setting up an easel and asking riders to stay longer is impossible. Over the years, the many, many portraits that I’ve drawn on the subway have become increasingly important to my work. With the memory still alive, and my drawing as reference I’ve begun to paint the people I draw on the train.
I PAINTED YOU TODAY

Hey thanks Larry. Yes, and I know you know a thing or two about spontaneity!
Yes Dad your right these last two paintings do relate. That painting of Mel was the second or third try. I was trying to arrive at the natural, direct, and casual feeling that I get when I draw on the subway; but find it when someone is posing for me.
I love it, you have a beautiful feeling in this as in Mel.
Planned spontaneity, not an easy task but you succeeded brilliantly. Very nice.
