Thank you for stopping by my teaching page. I hope you’ve looked around at the other pages on this site to get a sense or my own work. Below are examples of a few of my student’s work. I’ve taught in various universities, art schools, art clubs, workshops, community centers, and privately, side by side, in students homes for 15 years. My strength as a teacher is the ability to teach traditional skills as well as help students navigate creative blocks that have been in there way most of there lives. Drawing and painting can be a very natural experience. My goal is to teach students to teach themselves.

Helen Leff, Riverdale NY, Private Student.
Helen and I have worked together for at least three years now. As I did, she began right at the beginning, having very little experience in drawing and painting. Helen has come to the table with other innate abilities and interests, which we call on to power her development. She has a strong personal aesthetic and is confident in knowing what she finds beautiful and moving. Helen also has a wonderful and intuitive sense of color. This takes her a long way. So for Helen, we’ve developed “course” of copying the paintings she loves, as well as, painting the objects in her life that she’s collected over the years and is moved by there sentimental value and beauty. By the way, she’s paining here in acrylic.
Intro to Creativity, St John’s University, Queens.
This was a special class for me. Do to the nature of the class, the students who enrolled in this class were not art students. They were business and pharmacy majors. What made it special was the fact that most of these students felt that the class was pleasurable; a break from statistics and the periodic table. It was my goal to teach them that “they could do this.” That they could have art in there lives while pursuing other career options. Most of these students never picked up a drawing implement in there lives. We drew still life arrangements, painted with pastels, and posed for each other. The advantage that these students had over most people in an art class is that they weren’t burdened by self doubt and expectations. With the right guidanceĀ and the right goals, they did beautiful, spontaneous work.
Fashion Institute of Technology, Masters in Illustration, 3 week course.
I’ve been teaching a course in the Masters of Illustration program at FIT. It’s a two year program which ends in an MFA. My course provides the students with a traditional media and theory foundation. These students come to the class with a variety of experience levels and voices. My goal is to teach them traditional methods that they can choose to use with in their existing styles. As always we cover the essentials . . . light, color, drawing, composition.
